In a blood testing workflow, there are many ways an operator can make mistakes preparing the blood sample – especially in the stage between drawing the blood and transferring it into the testing cartridge.
Improper preparation leads to multiple error conditions later on, which wastes cartridges and precious time. In the previous version of the instrument, errors were displayed with error codes that had to be looked up in large paper User Guides to know what happened and how to fix the problem.
Working with medical staff for input and feedback, I created a new "error state" interaction pattern to visually explain errors and their remediation using images and simple instructions. There was no longer a need to look up any codes.
Also, during the blood preparation phase, an automated “slide show” would rotate through the illustrations on how to do it right.
This solution made it very easy to translate by only translating the caption part, which made it easier to accommodate all 14 languages for launch. This feature turned out to be one of the strongest selling points of the new device.
