The R&D team needed to create a new enclosure for the existing charging station for use in a hospital setting. The battery charger also needed to accommodate more than one battery at a time to ensure a second battery was always available.
There were several other mandatory requirements for the new device: a small surface footprint, easy-to-understand LED indicators, and ensuring that there was a firm click/snap connection “feel” to confirm that the battery packs were correctly mounted for charging.
I designed 11 unique solutions in Rhino 3D, for both countertop and wall-mounted use – because flat surfaces in a hospital setting is a scarce resource in busy and sterile environments.
Each 3D model was then printed on a Stratus printer, then weighted correctly with internal metal bars and painted with accurate brand colors.
The models were very precise so that they could be printed correctly and tested accurately for proper “snap closure” feel with existing battery packs. We found that operators really liked the models with USB power connectors for charging other devices.
